Notes on Coaching PK & K

NOTES ON COACHING PRE-K & KINDERGARTEN LEAGUE

ALL GAMES PLAYED AT FAIRMOUNT PARK SATURDAY MORNINGS ON FIELDS #1 (ON THE LEFT) AND #2 (ON THE RIGHT). ALL PRE-K GAMES ARE AT 9:00. KINDERGARTEN GAMES WILL START AT EITHER 10:30 OR 12:00.

UPON ARRIVAL, THE FIRST SET OF COACHES SHOULD GET THE EQUIPMENT OUT OF THE STAINLESS STEEL BOX. TAKE A BAG OF 12 BALLS (#3 SIZE) AND FOUR CONES FOR USE AS THE GOALS FOR EACH FIELD. THAT'S SIX BALLS PER TEAM. MAKE SURE BALLS ARE PROPERLY INFLATED (FIRM BUT NOT HARD, @ 5 LBS IS RIGHT). SET UP CONES AT THE GOAL MARKS: 9' APART. CONES CAN ALSO BE USED IN PRE-GAME DRILLS, SUCH AS DRIBBLING AROUND THEM.

FIRST AID EQUIPMENT IS IN THE STAINLESS STEEL BOX DURING THE SEASON, ALONG WITH ICE PACKS. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ARE.

AT THE END OF EACH SESSION, GATHER AND COUNT IN THE BALLS AND TURN THEM OVER TO THE NEXT SET OF COACHES FOR THE NEXT SESSION. LAST SESSION COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GATHERING ALL BALLS AND THE CONES, AND RETURNING THEM TO THE SHED. THESE BALLS COST $15 EACH. PLEASE DON'T LOSE THEM.

SESSIONS SHOULD RUN ABOUT AN HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES, ROUGHLY SCHEDULED AS FOLLOWS:
1. GENTLE WARM UP & STRETCHING (VERY IMPORTANT). 5 MIN.
2. DRILLS TO DEVELOP SKILL, SUCH AS DRIBBLING, PASSING. 25 MIN.
3. TAKE A "CHAULK TALK" BREAK TO DISCUSS POSITIONS AND STRATEGY. 5 MIN.
4. THE GAME: 30 MINUTES, LOOSELY TIMED. PAUSE FOR A SHORT HALF TIME.
5. END ON TIME: 10:15, 11:45, 1:15. IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET CARS OUT OF THE PARKING LOT SO A NEW GROUP MAY ARRIVE.

EACH TEAM SHOULD PLAY "3 0N 3" MOST OF THE TIME: A GOALIE AND "LEFT AND RIGHT FORWARDS". FOLLOW THE "MICRO SOCCER" SUGGESTIONS. LATER IN THE SEASON WHEN THE KIDS ARE IN SHAPE, IF EIGHT PLAYERS SHOW UP, YOU MAY PLAY "4 ON 4" (A GOALIE, ONE DEFENSE AND TWO FORWARDS). KIDS TIRE QUICKLY IN THIS FORMAT SO ROTATE PLAYERS ON AND OFF THE FIELD OFTEN. MAKE SURE KIDS HAVE PLENTY OF WATER.

PLAYERS SHOULD PLAY ALL POSITIONS. ONE COACH SHOULD BE ON THE FIELD TO FOLLOW THE PLAY AND TO REFEREE, WHILE COACHING. AN ASSISTANT COACH SHOULD ORGANIZE "THE BENCH". ATTEMPT TO FOSTER TEAM PLAY AND FUN! THE SCORE OF THE GAME IS SECONDARY (HINT, HINT: GAMES USUALLY END IN "A TIE"). AFTER A WEEK OR TWO, VOTE ON A TEAM NAME AND ELECT A CAPTAIN, OR TAKE TURNS AT CAPTAIN.

GET YOUR FELLOW PARENTS TO HELP OUT WITH COACHING AND REFRESHMENTS. TAKE A TEAM LIST AND ASSIGN JOBS & DATES FOR THE SEASON. IF A PARENT CANNOT MAKE A CERTAIN DATE, THEY SHOULD REPLACE THEMSELVES FROM THE TEAM ROSTER.

OUR GOALS IN THIS PROGRAM ARE FUN, EXERCISE, SOCIALIZATION, TEAM BEHAVIOR AND SPORTSMANSHIP. WE ARE THRILLED IF A FEW BASICS OF SOCCER SINK IN: (1) OUT OF BOUNDS (2) DON'T TOUCH THE BALL WITH YOUR HANDS (3) DON'T KILL THE OTHER KID.

KEEP IT LIGHT, CHEERFUL, FAST MOVING, LOOSE AND FUN!
DON'T TALK TOO MUCH. KIDS WANT TO PLAY!
