How to Manage a Tee Ball Game

Only use soft, marked “Tee Ball” and batting tee issued by FTLL.

Play three innings games.

Keep it very basic, and introduce the following to all players:

Basic game objectives

How to stand at the plate

How to hold, swing, hit, and safely drop a bat

Basic base running

“Ready position” to field batted balls

Names and locations of field positions

How to hold the ball and step and throw it to a target

Team play and mutual support; and

Sportsmanship.

When your team is batting:

Only the batter touches a bat (only when at the tee ready to hit)

All other bats down and in bags (teach this to parents too)

No outs are called

All players bat each inning

Runners advance only one base at a time

Last batter and base runners “clear the bases” to end half inning

Station batting team coaches at home, 1st & 3rd base

Change your batting line-up each game

When your team is in the field:

All defensive players play in the field at once (no one on bench)

No catcher

6 infielders max: all other infield positions + at 2nd base, if needed

All other players in the outfield

Infielders throw to 1st base on each play

Outfielders throw to 2nd base on each play

Station fielding team coaches in the field to coach players on “ready position,” position location, and keeping eye on ball.

Rotate player positions each inning

Coaching Tip: Pitcher usually gets to make the most plays on batted balls. Make sure everyone gets roughly equal turns as pitcher over the season.

Coaching Tip: Most plays include a throw to 1st baseman. Coach 1st baseman to always watch ball and pay attention to catch throws.
